Making Every Hour Count: A Journey Through Community Service at SMU

At SMU, graduation requires more than academic achievement. Undergraduates must complete mandatory community service hours—a requirement that transforms education into social responsibility.

For Shannon, this obligation has become a catalyst for meaningful change. Rather than viewing service hours as another box to tick, she has embraced the chance to grow whilst contributing to society.

Finding Her Own Path

Undergrads must seek out their own volunteer roles, encouraging initiative and allowing them to pursue causes that genuinely resonate. Shannon initially worked with elderly residents, helping them navigate the digital world. She spent hours teaching seniors to use smartphones, install applications, and access online services—work that proved both challenging and rewarding as she witnessed technology bridging generational gaps.

Currently, Shannon provides free tuition to underprivileged children, combining her academic strengths with her passion for social equity. She helps youngsters from low-income families with homework, exam preparation, and building confidence.

Her involvement has expanded to cultural events too. Last night, we visited the SMU campus during the Night Festival and Arts Fest, knowing she was volunteering there. We initially thought we might not find her amongst the crowds, but spotted her easily—hard at work as an event volunteer. She even stayed beyond the event's closing time to assist with logistics, clearly maximising her youthful energy for the benefit of the festival.

A Transformation Unfolding

The once shy and reserved young woman has blossomed into a responsible and engaging adult, actively seeking chances to strengthen her abilities, broaden her network, and make a difference. She's really making us proud.

This evolution reflects SMU's mission of nurturing well-rounded graduates. The university creates an environment where individuals can discover their potential beyond lecture theatres. From that quiet girl to someone confidently engaging with elderly residents, mentoring children, and coordinating events, Shannon exemplifies how higher education can catalyse personal growth.

Her journey demonstrates that SMU's community service mandate serves multiple purposes: ensuring graduates understand civic responsibility, providing real-world experience, and creating platforms for self-discovery. The institution has given Shannon—and countless others—the foundation to spread their wings and explore horizons extending far beyond the classroom.
